The night was terrible enough;
Was cold and windy. More than half
The soldiers knew – they wouldn’t come
To hearths, to wives. The night was dumb.
The night was deaf to thoughts of knights;
They didn’t want to die. And lights
Of fires were the lights of hope
That they would come! And they would tope,
And lie with women, and plough the ground…
But they deceived themselves. The ground
is now their grave. They died
for their ruler, bloody-eyed,
who won who gained, he is alive.
He has a kingdom with a hive
With treasures, silver, gold, rubies.
But they are dead. They might be loobies.
There, in the battle at the bloody hill
Between a merry hamlet and a water mill.
The night was silent, very sad.
The soldiers knew 0 they would be dead.
